- W4319874911 abstract "A biomaterial is a biological or synthetic substance that is designed to interact with biological systems, and it is often used in medical applications to augment or replace a natural function. The development of novel and intelligent biomaterials has been driven by the enormous increase in demand for bioalternatives that could perform the living activities of the body's organs in the absence of them. New biomaterials are constantly being developed with new applications, and the methods for analyzing their properties are constantly being improved to obtain adequate information on their safety and efficacy. To demonstrate the safety and efficiency of biomaterial or medical device, the biocompatibility testing must be performed. The purpose of such testing is to determine if material or device is suitable for human use and to eliminate potentially harmful physiological effects. As the field of biomaterials is constantly developing, new methods for the analysis of the biological and biomedical properties of biomaterials and standardized guidelines continue to require constant adaptations and revisions. This chapter provides an overview of the most common in vitro and in vivo methods used to evaluate the biological and biomedical properties of biomaterials and the references to some of the most recently published methods and guidelines." @default.
