- W4319934976 abstract "Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancer worldwide. A vast majority of CRC are sporadic in nature and heavily influenced by environmental factors. The gut microbiome forms an essential part of the colonic microenvironment and contributes to gut homeostasis. Recent work has highlighted the important role of the gut microbiome in modulating CRC initiation and progression. Gut dysbiosis, characterized by enriched pathogenic bacteria, promotes colorectal tumorigenesis by inducing cell proliferation and eliciting an inflammatory microenvironment. Counteracting these pro-tumorigenic effects are the beneficial commensals, which secrete antitumor metabolites or proteins, restore gut barrier function, and suppress colonic inflammation. Molecular mechanisms involved in gut microbiome-host interplay are diverse, including interaction via surface receptors, generation of bacterial metabolites/proteins, regulation of host immunity, and modulation of gut microbial communities. The further characterization of gut microbial species involved in CRC could lead to the development of novel microbial biomarkers for CRC diagnosis and microbial-based therapy for CRC prevention and treatment. In this book chapter, we will provide an overview on the role of bacterial, viral, and fungal species in CRC pathogenesis, their underlying molecular mechanisms and translational applications." @default.
