- W4319980445 abstract "In current scientific works there is lack of reliable information giving a number of Catholics living in Podolia at the end of the XVIII and in the first half of the XIX century. Numbers of believers in diocesan catalogues, which were regularly published from 1857, aside from mentioned defects of the source, permit to discover the number of believers belonging to Podolian dioceses. The data which is presented in the inspection files can help to fill the gaps in our knowledge concerning the earlier period.Firstly, almost general data about the number of believers in parishes of Podolia, come from 1796. Using the date we can conclude that in the Podolian guberniya, within borders established in December 1796, lived from 160 to 165 thousands Catholics. Statistical data which was collected twenty years later, and published by priest W. Marczyński shows that the Podolian guberniya was inhabited by 197,729 Catholics. The number of believers increased considerably within the following decade. According to files drawn up after inspections carried out around 1830, the Kamienets diocese was inhabited by 232,752 believers. First full data come from the time between uprisings around 1850. In 1849 data coming from the military statistical office was published. Information giving a number of believers in each parish, included in pre-inspection surveys from 1850, was also published. Russian data shows that Podolia was inhabited by 227,617 Catholics. Church data gives the number of 215,088 Latinists. The information is unexpected. Looking at dynamic growth of the population of the Podolian guberniya and a growing number of the population of Orthodox believers one could expect that from 1820 to 1850, especially in comparison to the information originating from around 1830, the number of Catholics would increase considerably. The amount of the Catholics not only did not increase but even decreased. Repressions which occurred after the fall of the November Uprising such as forced displacements, deportations, verification of the noble’s state, official rewriting of ex Uniats and their descendants to the Orthodox Church led to decrease in Polish ethos. Gaining Catholics, often against their will by the Orthodox clergy as a consequence of giving pastoral ministry, was also one of the reasons of the situation." @default.
