- W4319996170 abstract "The role of autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the cardiovascular and respiratory physiology in the adults is well-known, but besides these, it has an important function in the normal growth of the fetus and after birth. During its period of development and maturation, ANS is vulnerable to variety of intra and extrauterine exposures, that may disrupt its development, maturation, and the developmental trajectory, affecting its responsiveness, that may take years to manifest as a disease. ANS growth spurt occurs in the 3rd trimester and continues postnatally especially up to 6 months of age. Prematurity, growth restriction, environmental stress, further affect the immature ANS forcing dysmaturation and autonomic imbalance. Both sympathetic and parasympathetic components are important for life. Normal functioning of the parasympathetic is important for the social and emotional development of the neonates and infants, besides providing a vagal brake to the sympathetic activity. Anesthesiologists are always manipulating the activity of the ANS to maintain normality in the patients, which is even more important in the neonates. This chapter will take the reader through the ANS development, functioning, different receptors, and how to assess the functioning, and role during anesthetic management in the neonates." @default.
