- W4320000322 abstract "Antibiotics have a wide range of applications in combating various bacterial diseases and infections. However, the misuse of antibiotics has created a global threat. Rapid resistance development either due to mutations or by gaining antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) has increased environmental risks. The major sources of ARGs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in the ecosystem are animal husbandry, aquaculture practices, hospitals, and municipal sewage. These sources potentially affect the microbial communities by altering resistance profiling, phylogenetic structure, and ecological functions. Similarly, the overuse in poultry farming and livestock production leads ARGs and ARB to the human gut. The overuse of prophylactic antibiotics in aquaculture increases selective pressure facilitating the leaching and dispersal of antibiotic-resistance determinants in the aquatic ecosystem. When used for irrigation, the affected water bodies disturb the soil microbiome. This chapter focuses on numerous sources of ARB and ARGs, their fate, and potential consequences on environmental resistome." @default.
