- W4320000367 abstract "Ceres being considered as a “candidate ocean world” having habitability potential, and located much closer to Earth compared to other known confirmed ocean worlds such as Europa, Enceladus, Titan, etc., Ceres attracts much attention and importance in terms of future explorations. This chapter provides a glimpse of the past and present histories of the presence of water (in the form of hydrated minerals, water vapor, liquid water, or water ice) on the near-Earth asteroid Ceres. To set the stage for such a discussion, this chapter begins with an introduction, which provides the just needed background information on asteroids, meteorites, and chondrites. Other topics discussed in this chapter include why did the two hand-picked asteroids (Ceres and Vesta) in the asteroid belt become so important as to become the targets of NASA’s discovery-class mission, known as Dawn?; application of remote spectroscopic measurements in understanding this asteroid in general and particularly for detection of water molecules on Ceres. Some other topics addressed in this chapter include an overview of Ceres; hypotheses and arguments favoring the possible presence of water on Ceres; and clues leading to the presence of water on the surface and subsurface of Ceres. Apart from these topics, a discussion is provided on the year-2018 discovery of a seasonal water cycle on Ceres. The topics next addressed include hints on the possibility of an ocean hiding below the surface of Ceres, possibility of hydrothermal geochemistry to take place on Ceres, presence of organics on and inside Ceres, and an analysis of the possible habitability potential of Ceres. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion on the science goals and mission concept for future exploration of Ceres." @default.
