- W4320001731 abstract "The placenta is a transient organ that sits at the maternal–fetal interface. It plays a key role in regulating fetal growth and maintaining pregnancy. Due to its role in dictating the course of pregnancy, epigenetic changes that occur within the placenta may influence postnatal and adult health outcomes of the offspring. Furthermore, the placenta is derived from the fetus; thus the biological sex of the fetus can influence many of these outcomes in a sex-specific and dimorphic manner. Epigenetic marks within the placenta have been studied extensively, especially in the context of DNA methylation, which typically results in gene silencing. Studies have demonstrated that placental DNA methylation resulting from a myriad of exposures (i.e., maternal stress, xenobiotic exposures) can drive epigenetic programming in the neonate. Health outcomes resulting from these placental epigenetic changes have been evidenced to occur in a sexually dimorphic manner in the neonate." @default.
