- W4320006572 abstract "Pollution caused by trace metal elements (TMEs)poses one of the major risks to health worldwide. It can be due to industrial activities, household waste, agricultural inputs, as well as that of land-based origin following soil and rock erosion in the basin. Indeed, several TMEs such as cadmium, lead, and mercury, can affect the salubrity of the marine environment, since they do not undergo biological or chemical degradation. They can therefore accumulate in the various links of the trophic chains to toxic concentrations. Mussels are naturally seawater filters and can efficiently concentrate and accumulate these micropollutants. As a result, the consumption of these bivalve molluscs poses a risk of intoxication for the consumer. In addition, these metallic trace elements, by their toxic and carcinogenic properties, are strongly suspected behind the occurrence of a whole series of pathological conditions such as kidney and bone lesions, developmental problems and neurobehavioral disorders, high blood pressure, and potentially lung cancer or other hormone-dependent cancers such as prostate, breast, and endometrial cancers. In this chapter, we will discuss the risk of the development of cancers in humans following the consumption of mussels contaminated with metallic trace elements, in order to better control the risks of carcinogenesis associated with involuntary consumption of chemical contaminants." @default.
