- W4320071398 abstract "State-run schooling systems around the globe are witnessing the growing influence of external actors on articulations, provisions, policies, and outcomes of education. For instance, academies and charter schools, parental choice, contracting out, public-private partnerships, for-profit providers, benefit corporations, heterarchical governance, venture philanthropies, and many other examples all speak to increasing permeability of policymaking in education to private interests. This book aims to contribute to the emerging field of research that examines how education systems might invite in, be critical of, and form partnerships with a growing number of actors and interests involved in today’s provision of education. The volume has three objectives. First, it seeks to explore the concept of ‘external actors’ in education beyond the market or the third sector, non-profit organisations, to consider other entities and interests that shape schooling in different contexts. The book also identifies the various contexts in which different kinds of external actors emerge and considers the factors that facilitate or limit the influence they can have on understandings of the purpose(s) of education and the kinds of outcomes that are possible or likely. Finally, this volume examines how different external actors work strategically to form alliances within and across contexts to more successfully achieve their aims. The chapters focus on in-depth analytical explorations of different forms of interactions between external actors and schools in different educational contexts. By doing so, the book conceptualises the various relations that have developed and considers the impact of these for issues of equality, across contexts." @default.
