They declared their decision to abandon it and briefly expressed their feelings about this choice. Their statements were apparently formulated with great care, bearing little resemblance to the usual anti-Islamic, anti-headscarf sentiment. They revealed that they had worn headscarves as a result of encouragement or pressure from their families or schools. Consequently, they considered their abandonment of the headscarf to be a matter of emancipation, motivated by the desire to uncover their authentic selves. This chapter does not aim at a comparison of the secular and religious reactions to these Tweets, or the hegemonic imaginations regarding the public sphere and contemporary politics in Turkey that they are based on. Instead, it seeks to analyse the responses of Islamist men in order to examine the meaning that the headscarf of religious women has for them. It also seeks to explain how the decision of religious women to abandon their headscarves feels like a rupture in the masculine hegemonic project of Islamism." @default.
