- W4320161210 abstract "Thanks to our proximity to both the 24‐hour news cycle and the very devices in our hand and homes that open us to the world even as they facilitate the collection, storage, and processing of actionable personal data, more people than ever are aware of the increasingly sophisticated surveillance techniques and technologies that are at work in their everyday lives. At the same time, perhaps because of the ubiquity, intimacy, and increasing automation of so much surveillance, it can seem difficult to imagine meaningful ways to resist or counter it when necessary, or, in some cases, even justify why we should. In such a moment, the cultivation of a critical imagination that keeps pace with new developments is crucial, as is careful reflection on the historical antecedents and continuities that make the current contexts of surveillance possible in the first place. This entry is attuned to both of these exigencies and the way they have shaped contemporary advances in the study of surveillance as a radically transdisciplinary endeavor." @default.
