For him, it is not a science like other sciences, because it enjoys a twofold status: it is the science of social facts, but, as the last science in the classification of sciences, it sums up all the previous ones and takes the place of philosophy. Accordingly, his sociology takes often the form of a philosophy of history: properly speaking, its subject matter is not society but the overall progressive march of humanity.
