Transverse cutting of the watercore apple shows a glassy appearance in the affected tissues. To evaluate the relationship between the different positions of the fruit in the tree canopy and the formation of watercore, it is necessary to check the severity of watercore and fruit quality coefficient. This study was conducted from 2019 to 2021 in Hongqipo Experimental Orchard, Aksu, China using apples from six different positions (upper/east/south/west/north/lower) within the apple tree canopy and three harvest periods (185, 195, 205 DAFB). This is an ongoing study where severity of watercore and overall fruit quality was assessed on the same tree, as well as the light regime and photosynthesis. The experimental results indicated that the watercore scale of fruits increased with the delay of harvest time, and fruits from the upper sections of trees tended to have a higher watercore scale when compared with fruit from other canopy positions. Further, it was observed that fruits from the west side of the canopy had a higher watercore scale than from the east side, which could be associated with the better light exposure at the west side of the canopy. Comparison of PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) and severity of watercore in different canopy positions show the latter's development is regulated by carbohydrate assimilation supply. This study provides insight into the regulation mechanism of watercore in the 'Fuji' apple variety and offers management solutions for producers of watercored apples." @default.
