- W4320406216 abstract "The work of Black and Asian consultants has received little attention in research. The following article describes the role of such consultants in training and conciliation between local education authorities and the community. The consultants (also the present authors) are African, Pakistani and Indian, and work as educational psychologists. The work resulted from a request made by the Assistant Chief Education Officer (ACEO) for an evening seminar on the assessment of bilingual pupils. Members of the community including councillors, the chief education officer, the local educational psychology service, bilingual support teachers, special needs co-ordinators and other education officers were present. The seminar lasted three hours and during that time the three consultants gave presentations on issues surrounding the assessment of bilingual pupils, drawing upon research and personal experience; including linguistic, social and cultural issues. A debate and questions to the consultants chaired by the Assistant Chief Education Officer then followed. Frameworks for assessment as well as guidelines and recommendations for improving communication and establishing the trust of the community were put forward. The article describes and evaluates this particular intervention within a local educational authority as well as raising implications for educational psychology services." @default.
