- W4320479703 abstract "The article analyzes the attitudes expressed by Indo-Muslim thinkers concerning the Indian environment. Two main trends of thought are discerned. Some Indian Muslims entertained an intense desire to preserve Islam in what they conceived of as its pristine purity and strove to protect it from any encroachment of indigenous customs and beliefs. Others attempted to find a common denominator for Hindu and Muslim civilizations and to establish a mutually acceptable modus vivendi for their respective adherents. Ḍiyā’ al-Dīn Baranī, Aḥmad Sirhindī and Aurangzēb are taken as representatives of the first trend. The second one, which seems to have always been the weaker one, is represented mainly by Akbar, Dārā Shukōh, and, to a certain extent, Amīr Khusrau and Mirzā Maẓhar Jān-i Jānān. The emergence of Muslim separatism, from the end of the xixth century onwards, forced Muslim thinkers to elaborate a new formulation, in terms of nationalism, of the situation of the Muslim community in the Indian subcontinent." @default.
