Ronsard’s participation in the Court Festivals of his time is well known. Its entire philosophical dimension, however, needs to be restored. By some paradox, more apparent than real, night seems to inspire the poet more than day. The Sun is hidden? It can be present through theatrical artifice. When the King disguises himself as the Sun, he undoubtedly means to assert his pre-eminence over all the stars, which was necessary during the Wars of Religion era. But Ronsard had read Plato, Cicero and the Commentary on Cicero’s Dream of Scipio by Macrobius. He borrows their idea that the role of the Sun is to be the «moderator» of the stars, the one who makes their cosmic dance possible. The same should also apply to the Kingdom, where the King does not impose anything, yet must dance with his people. Oddly, it is the young Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, who best understands what true political authority is, as evidenced by his first Court Festivals." @default.
