- W4321108315 abstract "Academic Service Learning (ASL) is an acknowledged pathway to provide support for development in communities experiencing the brunt of marginalisation—as for example in rural spaces in a Global South country such as South Africa. One such partnership is FLY (Flourishing Learning Youth), a 10-year university-collaboration with a rural high school. One focus of FLY is for educational psychology-learners-in-training to provide services to Grade 9 high school learners who would usually not have access to this resource. In this chapter, we report on the retrospective experiences of young people (n = 31, female n = 14) on youth development as a consequence of FLY-educational psychology services. Data were generated using Participatory Reflection and Action (PRA) activities to elicit group discussions with participants divided into groups according to the year in which they were in Grade 9 and participated in FLY. The PRA-group discussions were captured as textual data (verbatim transcriptions of audio recorded presentations) and visual data (photographs of PRA activity artefacts). Following thematic analysis of the data it was apparent that young people thought educational psychology ASL was especially meaningful as mechanism for career counselling and that they felt equipped with enhanced self-knowledge, career knowledge, and decision-making capacity. From a youth perspective, there is thus over-time evidence that curricular interventions (such as academic service learning) by universities (or other higher education institutions) are low threshold pathways to positively impact on youth development to build communities in comparable spaces facing extreme adversity and vulnerable to maladaptation and negative outcomes." @default.
