The Club’s aim was typically Victorian: ‘improvement’ – of the nation’s dogs, dog shows and field trials. A profound though unintended consequence of its work was the remodelling of Dogdom into distinct and discrete breeds. Shirley specialised in many breeds over his fancying career, including Bull Terriers and Retrievers.
