- W4321765858 abstract "This chapter deals with iodine as an essential micronutrient for human health, essentiality of iodine for human health, sources of iodine, toxicity of excess iodine, iodine deficiency disorders, iodine biogeochemistry, and strategies for alleviation of iodine deficiency. Several of the trace elements that are essential for human health are found to be deficient in many parts of the world. Deficiencies of these nutrients in diets are a major public health concern causing increased morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Iodine is one of the prominent micronutrients necessary for the proper development of the central nervous system and for the proper functioning of thyroid which controls the performance and functions of the body, such as temperature, growth, reproduction, etc. Deficiency and excess of iodine cause disorders in the thyroid gland, and the disease is called “goiter.” Insufficient iodine intake is observed in many regions, mainly African and Asian countries. Iodine is a key component of thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), the latter being the active form. T3 plays a key role in regulating gene expression in all the cells in human body and is required for normal growth and development. Thyroid hormones stimulate nutrient breakdown and are the endocrine regulators of basal metabolic rate." @default.
