Linear phase comparison does not require gates and counting lines, resolution improvement is easy, and equipment structure is simpler. The improved technique of high linearity reflects the progress of the principle at the basic level—the linear phase comparison method with a proportional relationship of frequency and sampling has the best linearity. This is a reversal of the traditional belief that phase comparison can only be performed between signals of the same frequency nominal value. Not only the digital application is the resolution substantially improved, but it also far surpasses other measurement methods in terms of response time. The continuous frequency stability measurements from ns to days or more achieved by digital direct linear phase comparison are also not available with conventional measurement techniques. The central part of this chapter is the application of border effects in digital linear phase comparison, which is a good example of digital techniques where border effects come into play and break through the resolution limits of A/D converters. The measurement precision achieved by digital linear phase comparison through the intensive application of the border effect is already at a level comparable to that of the DMTD method, which has the highest international precision index." @default.
