It is with utmost humility and a great sense of responsibility that I acknowledge this wonderful opportunity bestowed upon me, to serve as the President of the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry (IAPHD). As we embark upon this exciting new voyage together, I sincerely hope that the stalwarts of our most respected specialty would continue to serve as our guiding lights, through their constant support and inspiration. I also harbor great expectations from all my distinguished contemporaries and highly motivated younger colleagues, whose unyielding spirit and clarity of vision never cease to amaze me. Being the relentless optimist that I have always been, I have complete conviction that Public Health Dentistry in India has entered its most promising phase. I state this, with complete cognizance of the many hurdles that face not only our own specialty but also the dental profession as a whole. The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it! As health-care professionals, our primary challenge is to develop strategies to address the persisting oral health inequalities which exist with regard to oral health determinants, oral health status, and access to oral health care, across the country. At the same time, we are also tested with professional trials such as rising number of graduates and shrinking employment opportunities. The need of the hour as we navigate these tumultuous times is clearly the institution of a National Oral Health Policy, which will provide us with not only a clear vision for the future but also chart our trajectory toward it. There is also the need to create greater opportunities and avenues for public health dentists, to put their versatile skills to best use. In addition to teaching, community service, and research conducted as part of academic responsibilities, and clinical practice in the private sector, more and more public health dentists should be able to navigate spaces such as clinical and administrative roles in oral health-care services in the public sector and public health research. To achieve this, we need national-level policy advocacy and greater intersectoral coordination with other health professions and research streams. I strongly believe that if we work together, with dedication and determination, IAPHD could helm these concerted actions. Another task that mandate our attention is to update and revitalize our education system in such a way that the dental graduates and the public health dentists develop the necessary skills and attributes required to cope with the changing requirements and circumstances of the profession. One of the ways, in which the association is already working toward making a meaningful contribution to this, is through the initiation of curriculum reform program toward competency-based education and training and preparation of vision documents for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I extend my heartiest congratulations to the excellent editorial team of the IAPHD for their hard work and dedication. The way the journal is currently positioned in terms of indexing, and citations, I feel extremely enthusiastic about its prospects and firmly believe that it has the potential to be a front-runner in the specialty.
