- W4322753005 abstract "Membrane fouling becomes major issue in membrane application for wastewater treatment. Many attempts have been developed to improve the antifouling properties of the membrane. In this study, the sulfonated zinc oxide (sZnO) nanoparticles were incorporated into polysulfone (PSf) membrane. The composite membrane was then surface-coated using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via facile dip-coating method. The characterization results showed that the facile dip-coating method successfully deposited PVA layer on the membrane surface without any defect. The FTIR result also confirmed the formation of hydrophilic groups as water-absorbing site. The hydrophilicity enhancement was also confirmed by the lowering water contact angle from 79.33° to 55.67°. The PVA coated membrane could increase the COD rejection up to ∼88% that was 8 times higher than that of uncoated composite membrane. The PVA coating also reduced the organic fouling tendency of the membrane during rubber wastewater filtration by decreasing total fouling resistance from 14.2 × 10-11 to 9.91 × 10−11 m-1. This study shows that the coating of PVA on the sZnO-PSf composite membrane can significantly improve separation performance and antifouling property without sacrificing membrane permeability." @default.
