- W4323357562 abstract "After eight centuries of coexistence under Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula, the once glamorously celebrated figure of the Moor gradually assumed the role of otherness in the Christian Iberian imagery - a dysphoric synthesis that led to the identity construction of the so-called “enemy of Christendom”. The Cheganca is a musical drama with choreographic and poetic interludes describing the adventures of a Christian vessel attacked by a Muslim ship but ending up by winning the battle and converting the Saracens to Christianism. This article shows that the Cheganca presents significant traits of the Carolingian cycle under the form of themes, figures and even textual fragments alluding to the combats between Charlemagne’s Twelve Peers and their opponents. Organized according to a semiotic square opposing inclusion and segregation, the drama displays the beaten Moors having to choose between two forms of exclusion: baptism - segregation followed by assimilation - or death - the ultimate form of annihilation. But the abandon of their former values is expressed not as the loss of their previous identity, but as the transcendence of their “state of sin”. Such an expression of the Iberian Volksgeist develops throughout most of its colonies, representing a metaphorical promise of inclusion to the frequently majoritarian non-white and non-Christian communities that accept to “transcend” their former identities expecting to pass from an initial phase of segregation to one of assimilation that might allegedly lead them to their full acceptance by their dominators - a promise sadly still to be fulfilled." @default.
