- W4324135153 abstract "Heavy metals compared to organics, are non-biodegradable and tend to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms causing serious pollution to the environment. Owing to efficient removal of heavy metals membrane technology can be considered for the treatment of heavy metals contaminated water. In this study, chabazite zeolite composite ceramic membrane (CHA/kaolin) was prepared through hydrothermal synthesis route and tested for the removal of heavy metal ions from its solution. The hydrothermal treatment was carried out at 100 °C for 24 h using in-house synthesized low-cost tubular shaped kaolin ceramic support in an autoclave reactor. The isoelectric point (IEP) of CHA zeolite particles was found to be 4.3. The obtained composite membrane was found to have porosity, pure water permeability, and pore size values of 30.5 ± 0.5%, 1.74 L/m2 h bar and 36 nm, respectively. The potential of the composite membrane in removing cadmium ions (Cd2+) from aqueous solution was tested, which revealed that the electrostatic interactions between the electrolyte and membrane surface played a dominant role in the separation process. The effect of applied pressure, pH of feed solution, and the nature of anions in the feed solution on membrane performance was further examined. Besides Cd2+ ions, the performance of the membrane in separating Al3+, Mg2+, and Ni2+ ions in single, binary and tertiary component systems was evaluated. The prepared composite membrane demonstrated excellent rejection efficiency (>99%) for all the metal ions (Cd2+, Al3+, Mg2+, and Ni2+) at an applied pressure of 2.76 bar, feed concentration of 1000 mg/L, and pH 3. Moreover, the estimated cost of the prepared ceramic composite membrane was found to be 868 USD/m2, which is much lower than the cost of ultrafiltration membranes reported in the literature. These findings suggest that the prepared composite membrane can be a suitable candidate for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater." @default.
