- W4324142016 abstract "Purpose: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) increases a patient’s risk for developing knee osteoarthritis (OA). Compositional changes to the articular cartilage often precede overt changes in structural pathology in the early phases of OA development. T2 relaxation times are the current gold standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcome for assessing cartilage composition. However, limitations in cost, accessibility, and technical expertise prevent the translation of using MRI to assess cartilage composition outside of well-funded research environments. An ultrasound assessment of cartilage thickness is a clinically accessible technique that has been validated against MRI to assess cartilage morphology. We also previously demonstrated that cartilage echo-intensity (i.e., brightness of the image) is associated with arthroscopic cartilage damage. However, it is unknown if cartilage ultrasound echo-intensity is associated with an MRI assessment of cartilage composition. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to model estimated T2 relaxation times from cartilage ultrasound echo-intensity and common demographic variables. Using this conversion equation, we then determined the agreement between the estimated T2 relaxation times and true, MRI-assessed T2 relaxation times." @default.
