It continues with the power developed by the surface forces acting on continuous systems, and how to evaluate the work done in some simple cases that occur in applications. An idealized, equilibrium power is then defined together with an idealized equilibrium process for use in later chapters. The chapter continues with a section on thermal science beginning with the rate of heat transfer across the surface of a continuous system, and continuing with the rate of heat absorption by the system. The latter is an idealized equilibrium rate of heat transfer that describes it by the rate increase of system properties like temperature and pressure. Heat absorption is defined by two specific heats, one at constant volume and another at constant pressure. They are measurable in a calorimetric process, which leads also to the concept of a thermal reservoir. Finally there is a discussion of how to measure heat absorption, and how to calculate it in some special cases. This last leads to a result for an equilibrium adiabatic process, a precursor for entropy." @default.
