- W43252312 abstract "The recent technological developments since the writing of the original Chapter 6 in the generation of light pulses with a duration in the range of 10 -1. s allows systematic investigations in a time domain approaching the oscillation time of visible light. A substantial number of recent publications is briefly summarized in four sections: On the time-scale of femtoseconds the standard optical probing techniques start to monitor the coherent response of the medium. A clear distinction between coherent and incoherent spectroscopy is no longer possible. From this point of view it is not surprising that oscillations on the signal curve, often called quantum beats, are ,observed in a variety of ultrafast experiments (Sect. E.1). Valuable information is obtained with typical coherent experimental techniques like three-pulse echo or hole-burning experiments using the shortest available light pulses (Sect. E.2). Based on the large bandwidth of the femtosecond light pulses a new excitation scheme is possible: The impulsive stimulated Raman scattering leads to the population of lowfrequency vibrational modes (Sect. E.3). Several research groups have presented interesting improvements and applications of conventional coherent techniques towards unprecedented time resolution and ultrahigh sensitivity (Sect. E.4)." @default.
