- W43259204 abstract "Porous A-W glass ceramics (apatite and wollastonite containing glass ceramics;A-W GC) alone and combined with rat bone marrow cells were inserted subcutaneously in the back of syngeneic Fischer rats. Fluorochrome-labelling was performed in the course of the experiment and the ceramics were harvested at 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 weeks post implantation. Undecalcified sections of the implants were examined by light and fluorescence microscopy. A-W GC without marrow did not show any bone formation, whereas marrow cells loaded A-W GC showed new bone formation in the pore areas. Fluorochrome analysis showed that osteogenesis generally started from A-W GC surface and proceeded in a centripetal direction towards the center of the pores. Scanning electron microscopical observations of the bone/A-W GC interface also revealed direct bone bonding to A-W GC. Biochemical analysis demonstrated high alkaline phosphatase activity and bone Gla protein contents of A-W GC with marrow cells. These results suggest that porous A-W GC can support osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow cells." @default.
