- W4327568800 abstract "On any given day, nearly half a million people are held in local jails awaiting trial. This population, comprised of individuals who have yet to be convicted, accounts for the vast majority of recent jail population growth. Although mounting evidence demonstrates the devastating social and financial toll of America’s pretrial practices, limited scholarly research has considered the contextual factors that undergird our overreliance on pretrial detention. Drawing on data across multiple administrative and publicly available datasets, we examine associations between contextual factors and pretrial detention across 2,136 counties. In our analyses, factors consistent with the focal concerns and minority-group threat perspectives emerge as key considerations at the pretrial stage. We find that the effects of threat are largely mediated by jail capacity. These results shed light on the broader contextual factors that pattern pretrial detention usage, underscoring their relevance for future pretrial research and ongoing reform efforts." @default.
