- W4327571449 abstract "Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size AcknowledgementsA melting pot of experiences and ideas collected in few key-symposia made the writing of this paper possible. I mention the Milankovitch and Climate Symposium, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Palisades, New York, USA (1982), the 2nd International Conference on Paleoceanography, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA, (1986), the European Research Conference, Polar Regions and Quaternary Climate, Giens, France (1999), the 125th Anniversary Milankovitch Symposium, Serbian Academy Sciences Arts, Beograd, Servia (2004), the JOI/USSSP IODP Workshop Tectonics, Circulation, Climate Caribbean Gateway, Austin, TX, USA (2006), and the Symposium 50 Years Quaternary Research Association (QRA), London, UK (2014). Of great relevance was the presentation by the late Jim Hays in the symposium in Beograd (2004) about the early developments of deep-sea drilling. I thank a few colleagues in particular, who were most important in feeding over the years my imaginations and experience: geo-ecologist Thomas van der Hammen (Amsterdam), marine geologist Michael Sarthein (Kiel), geobotanist Antoine Cleef (Amsterdam), geologist Gustavo Sarmiento (Bogotá), geologist-palynologist Waldo Zagwijn (Haarlem) and paleoecologist Vera Markgraf (Boulder). Encarni Montoya and James Riding are thanked for constructive comments on an earlier draft of this paper.HH thanks the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and their division for tropical research (WOTRO), for supporting the development of LCPRs over four decades. A rich experience in marine Quaternary palynology was obtained when HH worked at the University of Göttingen, Germany (1983–1987) with sediments from offshore northwest Africa in the frame of a research grant of the Deutsche Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technologie.Disclosure statementThe author declares no competing interests." @default.
