- W4327884546 abstract "Definitions of culture and health were radically challenged in the 1960s and 70s through new ways of living, working and thinking. Part of counter-cultural ‘revolutions’, crosscurrents from new social movements in the USA and the Paris uprisings of 1968 informed the creation of proto Arts in Health projects in the UK—often as underground ventures produced amongst diverse (sub)cultures. The role of artists in social movements is charted as they find ‘placement’ in healthcare settings, also accessing funding streams designed to reflect new experimental forms of art practice. The election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979 marked an end to municipal socialism and its funding for cultural workers, especially those who struck alliance with social movements. Industrial relations reached a point of confrontation in 1984, with research into health focused more directly on the causes and effects of inequality as social, economic and health divides all began to widen." @default.
