- W43527597 abstract "Robert Lee Wolffs recent attempt to resuscitate if not revive at least eighty forgotten Victorian novels of Faith and Doubt among 121 titles (in 92 volumes) in Garland Reprint Series is an enterprise that raises questions rather similar to those posed by Richard Holt Hutton as early as 1856. In an arti? cle for The National Review in July of 1856 Hutton took a guarded look at what had become a distinct new genre. The 1840s and 1850s had seen a host of polemicists resort to fiction to take sides in intense theological controversies brewing in England since advent of Oxford movement. By 1856, at least some superior writers had availed themselves of popular medium. Still, Hut? ton was hardly impressed by what he dubbed a hybrid species of composition. Although he allowed that, in an age of sharp doctrinal division and inquiry, Theology and Literature?the study of God and study of Man?need to go hand in hand, he found no novelist as yet completely successful in task of fusing forms of faith and experience. Hutton's dissatisfaction with new novel of religion was based on its un? compromisingly dogmatic character. Anticipating Matthew Arnold's complaints about narrow sectarianism of Victorian religion, Hutton is disturbed to find that each novelist's affiliation with a particular doctrinal outlook resulted in one-sidedness and incompleteness, a glaring gap between spiritual theory and everyday existence. He thus finds that in Evangelical stories actual life and the life inculcated are totally distinct; if works of one or two ladies with characters yielding enough to bend wholly to high Anglican theory seem more adroit, their writings nonetheless display, according to Hutton, con? sumptive air we should have to breathe ... if... duty of detecting a captivity for will where it does not offer itself, were engrafted on genial trustfulness of Protestant faith. Hutton allows that novels of a Broad Church writer like Charles Kingsley promote, in their genial/trustful way, something far nobler and healthier than Anglican school, yet concludes that Kingsley, too, has not succeeded in .. . reaching his aim. And Hutton pointedly refrains from mentioning superior fiction of Unitarians like Gaskell or Catholics like" @default.
