Academic research operates on a faulty theory of change that imagines policymakers will adjust their systems just because scholars report on damage and pain. The INGO focus on acquiring funding through research reporting, and the academic focus on career building through the swift extraction of information, rather than slow, long-term relationship building and movement support, reveals how research in INGO and academic culture is informed by logics of extractive capitalism. Academics should have a deep concern about the effectiveness of research, especially when working with local communities who may be oppressed by the very structures that help the academy thrive. To approach research in a more ethical and transformative way, academic researchers must include questions about the effectiveness of research itself into their fieldwork. During 32 interviews with community members along the Thailand–Myanmar border, I included questions on the usefulness of research, and its potential to make change. This chapter discusses participant's thoughts about why research was often not useful, and offered concrete steps for how to conduct research more ethically and effectively." @default.
