- W4360882690 abstract "Abstract The Persians adopted and adapted selected cultural aspects and traits from their original homeland (Anšan, a part of Elam) as well as from the conquered kingdoms and lands, and subsequently amalgamated these into innovative features of Persian art and architecture, social and religious practices, as well as court life, that characterize Persian society and culture. From their empire’s hierarchical power structure to the royal court and court life, from expressions of kingship and the presentation of the king and his court to the monumental palace architecture and building projects, the Persians looked for inspiration at their imperial predecessors in Elam, Media, Urartu, Lydia, Babylonia, Assyria, and Egypt. With a particular focus on the role of imperial Persian court, the chapter discusses the role of clothing, meritocratic appointment practice, gift-giving, and marriage, all of which created power structures among the nobility, as well as the king’s investiture, royal audiences, and funerary rites. The chapter also analyzes the role of women and education at the court, as well as activities such as banqueting and hunting that brought the king in contact with his subjects. While the city of Persepolis is identified as the embodiment of Persian culture, the chapter focuses on the latter’s dissemination across the empire and beyond, in a process that may be identified as “Persianization,” as well as the level of influence of Persian culture and society." @default.
