• W4360954894 abstract "This collection of articles in Surgical Pathology Clinics explores new diagnostic entities and concepts, areas of controversy or evolving understanding, and emerging techniques that aid in diagnosis, prognosis, or predictive response to targeted therapies, with a focus on lymphoid neoplasms. The publication of this issue follows the development of two updated paradigms of disease classification in our field: the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours and the 2022 International Consensus Classification. The entities of focus span the gamut from nonneoplastic to indolent to aggressive neoplastic conditions, beginning with complications of inflammatory diseases affecting the hematopoietic system and lymphoid tissues, including a novel coronavirus that has given rise to a once-in-a-generation global pandemic. The next area of focus includes categories of lymphoproliferative diseases and lymphomas for which novel subtypes and variants are newly or recently recognized and approaches to their diagnostic workup or specimen handling. Some of these newer variants arise more commonly in pediatric populations and require different approaches to management and therapy that are more conservative or localized in nature, thereby emphasizing the pathologist’s role in calling attention to this possibility and guiding appropriate management. Certain sites of disease, such as the skin, breast, and spleen, may be inherently challenging and require nuances in their diagnostic approach. Finally, various techniques have led to a paradigm shift, perhaps none more than the routine availability of next-generation sequencing, which has spawned unique considerations in terms of disease (re)classification, prognostication, and prediction to targeted therapies. Specific attention is given to the broader role of molecular diagnostic techniques in the evaluation of pediatric lymphoid neoplasms, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and plasma cell neoplasms. Flow cytometry continues to hold an important and growing role in hematopathology diagnostics, and issues that arise following novel and targeted therapies are explored and emphasized.
