- W4360978151 abstract "Competing visions for lifelong learning co-exist. The fact that one “official” discourse may be dominant does not mean that other ways of thinking about learning throughout the life course have disappeared. They are alive and well in a range of traditions and perspectives that retain their power to engage and persuade. Even when, for example, market logic seems unchallengeable, there is an enduring “undertow” of human strivings and responses to unfairness. This chapter moves on from the triadic conception of lifelong learning to focus on the significance of interconnections between its dimensions, without which the triad collapses. The social and societal aspects of human strivings that have consistently been underplayed in the discourses about skill, and even citizens’ participation, need to be taken more fully into account in scenarios for change. Lifelong learning increasingly relies on digital world solutions to support learning participation through the life course. At the same time, profound social and economic inequalities, the cumulative effects of insufficient investment in public services, and the fragilities of ecosystems have been laid bare in the global pandemic. The chapter argues that reaching for lifelong learning “solutions” means an end to reliance on the idea that systemic gaps can be filled by the agency of individuals availing themselves of (digitally enabled) opportunities. There is potential, in social ecological approaches, for human strivings and the exercise of responsibility reflexively to reshape understandings of how lifelong learning can be developed as, and for, the public good." @default.
