- W4360979432 abstract "This chapter describes the processes of dying without euthanasia, and the means of caring for patients dying a hospice-supported natural death without euthanasia. Skilled care under veterinary supervision is mandatory during the last hours of life. The environment in which care for imminently dying patients is provided should be conducive to privacy and intimacy and allow family and friends free access to the dying animal. Clinical competence, willingness to educate, and calm, empathetic reassurance are critical to helping patients and families in the last hours of an animal's life. Pain recognition and treatment are important; however, caregivers must understand that their experience when witnessing the patient actively dying may be very different from the patient's experience . The chapter describes Physical and behavioral changes during the early and late stages of active dying, and at the time of death. Four types of active death are described, including Slow and detached, Slow and engaged, Fast track and Restless and frustrating. Management of clinical signs during active dying, and the role of administering medications, fluids and food is discussed. In summary, it is important to learn about and embrace death as a natural, inevitable part of the circle of life. Dying is a very complex natural process involving many different physiological pathways and various organ systems, all leading to the eventual cessation of all biological activity. While fear of death is natural, the dying process itself does not cause pain." @default.
