- W4360982180 abstract "G-quadruplexes (G4s) have been recognized to affect almost all cellular pathways and play a role in the life cycle of many pathogens. Due to their high thermodynamic stability their regulation relies on proteins capable of dissolving these structures. The most relevant proteins for this process are helicases. Helicases are ATP (or GTP) fueled enzymes, which can usually resolve various classes of nucleic acid structures, but many do have a preference toward certain types. As G4s are composed entirely of non-Watson-Crick base pairs, not all helicases are able to act on these structures. On the other hand, some enzymes seem to be highly specific and favor G4s as targets. In the following we will give an overview of some classes of disease-related helicases involved in G4 regulation and their pathophysiological roles. Moreover, we provide a comprehensive list of known G4-resolving helicases and point out relevant conservation across species, underlining the importance of G4s at fundamental processes of the cellular metabolism." @default.
