- W4361014066 abstract "Listeria monocytogenes is an important opportunistic foodborne pathogen linked with rare outbreaks but often leading to fatal illness. Antibiotics are used as immediate therapeutic agents for its control and to reduce infection. Ampicillin along with aminoglycoside, trimethoprim in combination with sulfa drug and erythromycin were the common drugs used to treat patients suffering from listeriosis. However, incidence of resistant strains in clinical and food isolates against the previously susceptible antibiotics is an alarming issue that poses threat to public health. This chapter highlights the occurrence and the response of L. monocytogenes isolates from seafood environment to different antibiotics. The most widespread mechanism of acquiring resistance in these isolates is through the attainment of mobile genetic determinants such as plasmids and transposons through conjugation, and the most effective mechanism of resistance is through efflux pumps. Furthermore, the biofilm-producing ability of L. monocytogenes and control options to be implemented in seafood processing plants is discussed." @default.
