Steven Harvey's The Beloved Republic is a volume of essays collecting and reflecting the miscellaneous nature of passing during the past twenty-five years. Not only does Harvey's title echo Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country, but his initial essays focus on subjects congenial to Paton: racism and the brutality of racist thugs. Harvey is a decent, kind man from whom time hasn't stripped the will to hope. He believes the most effective weapon the republic wields is creativity, the determination of good people, as E. M. Forster put it, to create and discover, in Harvey's slight emendation, the commitment of ordinary people to helping others. Would that a statement brighter than Jake Barnes's, Isn't it pretty to think so? might come to mind. How do well-meaning people my age protect the beloved republic? Last month an oncologist said to me, I think we can keep you alive as long as you want to stay alive. I laughed. He looked puzzled, but then he, too, laughed. Waiting for me at home was a T-shirt sent from Fort Lauderdale by a former schoolmate. Printed on the front of the shirt was DeSantis 2024. Make America Florida. At the conclusion of Melville's Omoo, Omoo bade goodbye to his companion, Doctor Long Ghost. Afterward, Omoo's ship sailed and the doctor vanished from Omoo's life. By noon, Omoo stated, Tahiti had gone down in the horizon; and all before us was the wide Pacific. I tossed the shirt into a wastebasket. Maybe keeping alive happiness and optimism is easy only if the horizon outside one's window is wide and empty. Mine is narrow. Harvey's book is a miscellany, and other essays mitigate shadowy thoughts about our bruised nation. He describes a fiddler whose music, like the gospel song I Saw the Light, brightens mood and expels darkness and night. He writes about the comfort of his enclosed office, his battered [End Page 186] Royal typewriter, and the Book of Knowledge he read as a child. He celebrates the shaping power of poetry and mentions a razor blade presented to him by a graduating student. For years, the student cut herself with the razor but stopped after studying with Harvey at Young Harris College. He praises the transforming power of touch.
