- W4362633916 abstract "A sprinkling of dust may not give flight to its target like fictional characters, but with the right balance of elastic and cohesive interactions, a flexible sheet will bend and warp, enveloping granular matter on contact. In this issue of Matter, Guerra and Holmes explore a mechanism that is a new “twist” on classic approaches that deform elastic sheets into wrinkled or crumpled membranes. A sprinkling of dust may not give flight to its target like fictional characters, but with the right balance of elastic and cohesive interactions, a flexible sheet will bend and warp, enveloping granular matter on contact. In this issue of Matter, Guerra and Holmes explore a mechanism that is a new “twist” on classic approaches that deform elastic sheets into wrinkled or crumpled membranes. Elastogranular sheetsGuerra et al.MatterFebruary 21, 2023In BriefWhen cells pack within an embryo, plant roots burrow into soil, and geotextile fabric stabilizes a hill, there is an interaction between grains and structures. We study these seemingly disparate systems by considering general interactions between grains and sheets. We identify and delineate distinct behaviors: sheets locally conforming to grains (e.g., vacuum-sealed coffee beans), sheets globally wrapping around granular clumps (e.g., geotextile fabrics covering hills), and grain-sheet bilayers morphing under differential growth (e.g., structure formation in the lung and stomach).
