Comparing and contrasting the impact of COVID-19 on three groups—informal wage workers, self-employed, and formal workers—the labor market impacts of the COVID-19 crisis have proven unequal, with the crisis appearing to have reduced employment and income disproportionately among less well-educated or lower-wage workers, women, migrants, and more contingent workers. Additionally, the differential response of informal wage employment to the COVID-19 lockdown (1) primarily occurred in urban areas; and (2) proved inconsistent between the relative declines in income and consumption across households headed by informal and formal wage workers.
