- W4365503686 abstract "This chapter documents permeability evolution under cycling confining stress conditions (14.0–65.5 MPa) of siltstone, matrix-supported conglomerate, and organic-rich siliceous mudstone samples taken from a well in the Delaware Basin, West Texas, USA. The measured matrix permeability in the core plug samples (~3.0 × 10 −20 m 2 to ~1.3 × 10 −18 m 2 ) is in agreement with the dominant pore throat radius (~0.01 to ~0.1 μm) observed with mercury intrusion porosimetry, assuming the capillary behavior can be explained by a bundle-of-tubes model and the dominant pore throat radius controls the permeability. The organic-rich siliceous mudstone matrix permeability (after the closing of micro-fractures) exhibited the greatest stress-dependence, which we attribute to the greater compressibility of pore throats within the clays and organic matter. Under cyclic loading, the permeability of siltstone and matrix-supported conglomerate samples remained within a narrow range. However, the permeability of organic-rich siliceous mudstone samples varied by almost four orders of magnitude depending on the sample quality. We demonstrate that it is possible to close micro-fractures that are present due to disturbance that occurs during both coring and sampling and measure the matrix permeability and its true stress dependence using a suitable permeability test program." @default.
