- W4366089711 abstract "The main aim of this chapter is to confirm the hypothesis that the development path of nouns that are not considered taxonomic resembles the path of grammaticalization of parallel constructions with TNs. This means that the pattern established for the development of constructions with TNs has a wider range than originally assumed as other nouns not typically labelled as TNs may share it. The author verifies this hypothesis by a collostructional and semantic study of (i) the lexical uses immediately preceding the first grammaticalized uses and (ii) the grammaticalized uses of w stylu (lit. ‘in styleLOC.SG’) in modern Polish. The grammaticalization paths of w stylu are identified based on a qualitative and quantitative corpus study in the span of 20th and 21st century. The data indicates that the two main uses of grammaticalized w stylu - the prepositional and particle uses - differ syntactically, mainly with regard to the type of the required right-hand filler. It also shows that the fact that both meanings of w stylu are similarity-based allows for it to be used in a hedging function if it co-occurs with vagueness markers (like coś ‘something’, rzeczy ‘things’) or demonstratives in anaphoric use or undergoes a position switch (to a final-tag)." @default.
