- W4366171898 abstract "Ascorbic acid is a potent and well-studied antioxidant with well-documented benefits for signs of photoaging. Mechanisms of action include an increase in collagen production and tyrosinase inhibition. Thus, ascorbic acid has become one of the consumers' most critical cosmetic ingredients. However, ascorbic acid is water soluble, does not penetrate the skin quickly, and is extremely unstable, making it difficult to dissolve high concentrations into topical formulations where the ascorbic acid remains stable over time. We report on an anhydrous formulation with ACTISOLVTMtechnology that delivers 20% ascorbic acid to the skin and remains exceptionally stable for over a year. Clinical studies were carried out on a fresh 20% ascorbic acid formulation and an aged ascorbic acid formulation. We ran three clinical studies on this formulation: two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies where the formulation was approximately three (3) months old at the study start and a monadic study where the formulation was approximately seventeen (17) months old at the study start. Both formulations showed expected improvements in hyperpigmentation scores, skin firmness, and size of wrinkles (p<0.05). More importantly, the fresh and aged samples showed no significant difference in the measured endpoints, suggesting that ACTISOLV allows this product to provide efficacy to the consumer over the product’s entire shelf life. It should be noted that the fresh ascorbic acid product, when tested for ascorbic acid content, was 20.6%, while for the aged product, the ascorbic acid content was 19.6%. Full details on the ascorbic acid round-robin testing, testing protocols, and method validation will be reported separately elsewhere. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first clinical study to compare aged and un-aged ascorbic acid products and obtain no difference in efficacy. This suggests that ACTISOLV allows our anhydrous ascorbic technology to remain incredibly stable and clinically effective on the skin after more than a year in storage at room temperature." @default.
