- W4366173467 abstract "We recently diagnosed a middle aged Missouri native with multibacillary leprosy. His travel history was unremarkable and authocthonous acquisition of the leprosy bacillus was suspected. Over the past decade the range of the nine banded armadillo has expanded northward, likely from climate change. The patient reported frequent exposure to nine banded armadillos near his home suggesting the potential for vector borne local transmission. We undertook a study of nine banded armadillos from several areas around the state of Missouri. Two teams evaluated armadillos killed either by traffic or during legal culls on farmland. Liver, spleen, and heart were harvested when present. Specimens were preserved separately in 70% EtOH and geographic location of the source animal noted. DNA was extracted from these tissues and evaluated for the presence of Mycobacterium leprae DNA. Approximately 15% (at the time of this submission - analysis ongoing) of Missouri armadillo samples were positive for the presence of M. leprae. Several positive specimens were from the immediate geographic area of the affected patient. We have confirmed the presence of M. leprae in a small percentage of nine banded armadillos from Missouri, suggesting that they are a potential vector for autochthonous acquisition of leprosy. This is one further example of a vector borne infectious disease that must now be considered outside of its typical geographic range due to changes in the climate." @default.
