- W4366173653 abstract "Cutaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma (CAA) is a rare, cutaneous adnexal tumor with a reported equal distribution in males and females. However, it has not been established whether tumor characteristics or prognosis varies by sex. We utilized data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program to investigate differences in CAA epidemiology and survival by sex. Data for CAA were collected from SEER-17 (2000-2019). The rate session tool was used to gather data on the total number of CAA cases, incidence, age, race, ethnicity, primary tumor location, staging, disease-specific mortality, and sequence number of reportable malignancies. Traditional chi-squared or Fisher exact tests were used to compare the aforementioned variables between males and females. Rates are reported per 100,000 and age-adjusted to the 2000 United States (US) Standard Population. In SEER, CAA is more common in women (with an incidence of 0.3098 in women vs. 0.0298 in men). Significant differences between the sexes were observed for: tumor size (<0.0001), stage (p=0.0360), primary tumor location (p<0.0001), and lymph node involvement (p<0.0001). In men and women, the majority of tumors were less than 1 cm in diameter, though more women had tumors with a diameter less than 1 cm (incidence of 0.0408 vs. 0.0045). The most common primary tumor site was the upper outer quadrant of the breast in women and skin of the trunk in men. More men than women had no lymph node involvement (incidence of 0.0156 vs. 0.0073). Notably, the rate of disease-specific mortality was higher in women than in men (0.0490 vs. 0.0039). Age at presentation, race, ethnicity, disease-specific mortality and household income did not differ significantly between the sexes. In a large, representative sample of the US population CAA was more common in women than in men and women experienced a less favorable prognosis with a higher rate of cause-specific death. Future studies are warranted to determine the underlying causes of these novel differences." @default.
