- W4366174150 abstract "Increasing air pollution is common around the world, and studies on the effects on atopic dermatitis (AD) have reported mixed results. We systematically reviewed and synthesized the current global epidemiologic evidence for air pollution exposure and associated medical visits for AD. This review followed PRISMA guidelines, and searches were conducted on four databases. The searches yielded 390 studies, and after screening, 18 studies from around the world with at least 5,197,643 medical visits were included for final analysis. Studies were located in: China (67%; 12/18), South Korea (22%; 4/18), the United States (6%; 1/18), and Turkey (6%; 1/18). Air pollutants examined across studies were: PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3. We found that clinic visits were positively associated with exposure to particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5), [91% (10/11) of studies], PM10 [85% (11/13)], nitrogen dioxide (NO2) [86% (12/14)], sulfur dioxide (SO2) [77% (10/13)]. Results were equivocal for ozone [50% (4/8) reported positive association] and limited for carbon monoxide [25% (1/4) reported positive association]. PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 had positive association with clinic visits when stratified by temperature. Exposure to selected air pollutants, PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and SO2, is associated with clinic visits for AD, and increasingly poor air quality may increase health care use for AD." @default.
