Discussion is quite likely the most commonly used active engagement strategy in higher education. However, there is a tendency to assume that effective discussions are a matter of happenstance or serendipity. Instead, effective discussion is most likely to occur when instructors recognize higher education classroom norms that can easily undermine discussion and utilize strategies to overcome the associated challenges. Common challenges include students’ lack of preparation for discussion and instructors’ failure to provide opportunity to reflect prior to asking students to speak, unfocused discussions, slowing dominant talkers while engaging quieter students, resistance to sociological insights, large enrollment courses, and online discussion. In this chapter, we summarize sociological scholarship on strategies for overcoming each of these barriers to effective discussion." @default.
