- W4366816712 abstract "This chapter argues that the revival of the cult of the Great Patriotic War and the waning of public interest in Soviet-era repressions in contemporary Russia stem not only from top-down policies of Putin’s government but also from internalized patterns of remembrance ingrained in collective imagination. These patterns of remembrance are inculcated through cultural habituation, preserved through embodied transmission, and naturalized by appeals to family memory. Extending Olick and Levy’s concept of mythical logics of remembrance, the chapter theorizes mnemonic habituation as a process that solidifies people’s affective attachments to scenarios of patriotic sacrifice. The chapter’s two case studies illustrate the formation of memory habits via repetitive exposure to war films and the activation of these memory habits in grassroots rituals that stress grateful remembrance as a duty to one’s family." @default.
